About Us
Ryan Ellapan
My Personal Testimony
My name is Ryan Ellapan. I am currently 22 years old. My story begins 10 years ago when I was a normal 12-year-old child.
These past few years have been very challenging to say the least. It all began in grade 6. I was a healthy child and normal as any six-year-old. I then started experiencing stomach aches sporadically but never complained as I wanted to be strong. Never mentioned it to my parents as well.
On hindsight I should have as, gradually, the pains worsen. Eventually the pains got so bad that I needed urgent medical attention. The scans showed a wall of sludge in my gall bladder. During this time, I had no appetite as the pains would get more severe if I had something to eat hence, I suffered severe weight loss. This lasted until the end of 2013.
I felt a little better throughout 2014 but towards the end of 2014 it started again. At this point I was referred to a specialist at Donald Gordon. This was a very difficult stage in my life as I had to need stents inserted in my bile ducts to control the flow of my gall bladder as gall stones were forming.
The procedure had to be done surgically every two months. On every surgical procedure the specialist used to remove 20 to 30 stones at a time. I missed many days at school due to sleepless nights, pain and fever brought about by the blockage of the gall stones in my ducts. The specialist wanted to remove my gall bladder but due to my thin bile ducts, the procedure would be more complicated, and I would have to remain in hospital for a month due to drainage issues etc.
In our desperate situation, my mum, granny and I travelled to India to try and have the gall bladder removed by robotic surgery. The trip only lasted 2 days. In spite of all arrangements being made prior to going to India when I was physically examined the diagnosis was that my medical situation was very rare for a child my age and robotic surgery would be a huge risk. Doctors advised against the robotic approach and suggested the normal conventional approach which would keep me in India for minimum of one and half months. My parents and I agreed that we would rather have the surgery back home as we would have the support of all our family and friends which would make the situation better than if done in India.
We managed my situation and in 2016 on recommendation from our specialist my gall bladder was removed. Bearing in mind that after all this time there was still no conclusive diagnosis on my condition. In fact, I felt that my condition was being used to experiment more than a cure. At this point my liver was suffering damage as well. A few days later, my situation began to deteriorate, and my wound became infected. I had to return to hospital and theatre to clean up the wound. I was placed on strong antibiotics and was released after spending a week in hospital.
I thought that this was the end of my problems but low and behold the pain and fever returned. My specialist confirmed that he was at his wits end did not know how to proceed and suggested that my case be moved to the liver transplant unit at the hospital.
I saw the professor beginning 2017 and medically things started going well but I was having my setbacks occasionally.
I was approximately 18 tablets a day and with all the side effects of the medication, I put on a tremendous amount of weight, had severe skin rashes and the professor was also worried about me contracting cancer from the type of medication he was using.
Due to my young age, the professor suggested that we prolong a transplant option. This was my matric year, so it wasn’t easy to go through all this. Every time I went for a blood test, the results would be different. 1 good result and 1 bad result. My bilirubin should have been around 45 normally but mine was in the thousands.
In mid-2017 my cousin asked me to come to church with him and that is where my life changed miraculously.
I met a pastor from India, he singled me out of 150 so odd people and just by looking at me and feeling my stomach diagnose by exact medical problems and symptoms. I was flabbergasted as this is the first time I have never seen or been in contact with the Pastor. I was also not in contact with anyone else in the church besides by cousin. This was amazing and it’s hard to explain but I felt the spirit of God in me.
This changed my life forever as there were many times in these past seven years where I felt suicidal. I thought I would be better off dead, but God had a plan for me and with God’s mercy and grace today I can stand giving my testimony today.
I’m still under continuous treatment with my professor but have been so without any surgical procedures in the last three years and I can truly say that I am blessed. My gratitude goes out to my family and friends for the support, prayers, and blessings at my time of need. My special appreciation goes to my special Mum who was with me continuously through all the tough times, through the procedures, stay with me at hospital, sleepless nights etc.
How I Give Back To God
Establishing Salvation Foundation
After having such a near death experience, my heart was really opened into helping others.
I went ahead and started my own Non-Profit-Organization called SALVATION FOUNDATION. This currently runs with myself and supported by my mum, dad and sister.
Our charity work began at the end of 2020 where we collected over 1000 clothing items for a rural township. We have also done Christmas boxes for THE ANGELS BABY SANCTUARY. We raise funds through hosting events such as cars shows and sports tournaments. Our most recent feeding was done for Easter at The Ezibeleni School for Physically Disabled Children, which was a great success.
We are trusting in God to keep us going and to bless us with the means to support the needs of our communities that is so dearly needed.
As a youngster myself, my advice to my fellow youngsters to make a positive difference in society.
We were all put on this earth for a purpose and the onus is on us to honor that purpose. We must make a positive difference in society. Put God first in everything you do, and you will no doubt be blessed abundantly. You are never too young to make a difference. Follow your heart and do the right things according to God’s word. Peer pressure is very alive in our community but when the chips are down your peers are not there to pick up the pieces with you, but you are not alone God is with you always…………believe it.
God is good all the time and all the time God is good.
